Elaine Woods paints the story of the kuniya (carpet python) and its journey across the Country of Papulankutja (Blackstone, WA). The kuniya lived in the rock holes, moving through the landscape and leaving tracks across the sand. The painting represents these tracks and movements, marking the presence of the python as it travelled. This is her grandmother’s Country – kuniyaku ngura – the home of the python, rich with story and meaning.
