For Pitjantjatjara people living in the central and western desert, deep knowledge of water sources has always been crucial to survival. These tjukula (rockholes or waterholes) are scattered across the landscape, holding precious water after rain.

This intimate understanding of Country means families can locate water and food even in the harshest seasons. Today, Anangu continue to protect these sites—using rocks and spinifex to shield them from animals, and now also from feral and stock animals.
