Marita Baker - Kalaya Tjukurpa (Emu Dreaming) - 24-158
I have painted the creation story for Kanpi area. The story is about Wati Kalaya (the Emu Man). Each day he went to Kanpi Rockhole with his chicks and met with Wati Kipara (the Bush Turkey Man) who also bought his child. One day the emu told all his children to hide in the bush and he watched for the turkey to climb up the rocky riverbed towards the rock hole. When the turkey arrived at the rock hole with his child he asked the emu "where are all your children?" The emu replied " I've killed them all, they were too much trouble and you should do the same". The turkey’s son asked his father to reconsider. "Please don't kill me”, he said, “I'm a good son, I can help you!" But the turkey killed his son as instructed by the emu. Ngaltutjara (poor thing). As soon as the turkey had killed his only son the emu chicks came down from the hills and it was clear the turkey had been tricked. He became very angry and swore he would get revenge.
