A family mat is woven by each member of the family, as passed through the family and cannot be sold traded or gifted outside the family kinship. Each family within our nation as they own design to represent their family nga: tji and area they belong to and carry the mat to ceremony and cultural events that they gathered on and used for covering and sitting on.
Cedric Varcoe is a contemporary Ngarrindjeri and Narangga artist with strong family connections to Raukkan and Point Pearce. His work brings to life the creation stories of Ngarrindjeri lands and waters — from the River Murray and Lower Lakes to the Coorong, South Coast, and Kangaroo Island. Alongside painting, Cedric also practices traditional weaving techniques using river rushes.
