Harlequin Fish

Ghost net, galvanised wire, rope and twine, 187 x 62, 2018.

The Harlequin Fish is a beautifully bright, local species of marine ray-finned fish from the Anthiadidae family. It’s an uncommon species, usually found in the deep waters off the Ceduna Bay area. This artwork was created by artists from Yalata in collaboration with Sue Ryan, Pam Diment, and Sherrie Jones. The fish is crafted from an orange prawn net, with yellow, blue, and red details sourced from local fishing companies. Its teeth are cleverly made from old thongs washed ashore, reflecting both creativity and connection to place.

The Harlequin Fish sculpture is a collaborative creation by artists from Yalata and Arts Ceduna, in partnership with facilitators Pam Diment, Sherrie Jones, and lead coordinator Sue Ryan. In 2018, the two-week Marine Debris Project brought together nearly 20 community members in Yalata to gather washed-up fishing nets and rope, transforming marine waste into beautiful, meaningful sculptures such as the Harlequin Fish and an Orca
