“Khondili the Whales speaks to our Ramdinjeri dreaming story about Khondili - a powerful ancestor who was the keeper of fire. All the Ramindjeri Ngarrindjeri people would gather in the Hindmarsh Valley to hold ceremonies for Khondili. They tried to get the magic of fire from him but as they danced Khondili was speared and run out to sea along Latang (the Hindmarsh River) before being turned into a whale. As a whale he would return to Victor Harbour every year, bringing his father to care for the young until they were strong enough to swim. Our Ramindjeri people would celebrate the return of Khondili the Whales at the start of each Winter.”
Cedric Varcoe is a Ramindjeri-Ngarrindjeri and Narungga artist who lives on Country. Cedric shares stories through his works of art. He wants people to connect to their miwi, the spirit that makes us and shapes us as a person, and connects us to our totems and life that belong to Country.
