“This artwork reflects the way Ngarrindjeri waters flow through the heart of Country, connecting all tribes from the River, Lakes, Coorong, and Sea. These waterways are living pathways - carrying stories, culture, and identity across vast distances.. The shifting colours in the painting echo the changing character of water through the seasons, and during sunrise and sunset when light transforms the surface into something new. Yet beneath these variations, the current and waves remain one entity; moving with a shared rhythm that mirrors the unity of Ngarrindjeri people.”
Currently based in Adelaide, Melanie Koolmatrie is a Ngarrindjeri, Ramindjeri, Boandik and Peramangk multidisciplinary artist. Recent works explore her deep cultural and personal connection to water, speaking to water’s role as a source of transformation, reflection, and renewal.
