In a story that redefines the self through connection and Ancestral memory, this work is a personal iteration about cultural and creative revival, and an inherent knowing that became evident the moment I engaged with weaving. Using a multitude of traditional techniques, the complex shapes and lines bring together the many parts of my story as both a woman and First Nations artist in contemporary Australia.
Marisa Ballinger is a multi-disciplinary artist based on Giabal Jarowair Country, Toowoomba. Influenced by her Ngiyampaa heritage, Marisa draws on memory and life experience to inform the deeply personal narratives within her work. Weaving is central to Marisa’s multi-disciplinary practice, creating forms embedded with the stories that shape her identity. Blending contemporary and traditional techniques, she investigates form, space, light and shadow.
