Sonya Rankine is a Narungga, Ngarrindjeri, Ngadjuri, & Wirangu woman who is a multidisciplinary artist. Sonya established herself as a weaver under her business name of Lakun Mara in 2019. Lakun Mara means 'Weaving Hand' in the Ngarrindjeri language. Sonya first learnt to weave from master Ngarrindjeri weaver Aunty Ellen Trevorrow and was an important moment in her life. Lakun Mara is weaving + culture and is at the heart of her art that is strongly linked to cultural maintenance, survival and revival. Sonya’s weaving incorporates traditional and contemporary weaving techniques to create unique pieces connected to culture and the natural materials used.
