Nurina paints her grandmother’s Tjukurpa from a place to the west of Watarru, near the Western Australian border. This country is located in the APY Lands of South Australia. Ngapari is the little white spots you find on the green leaves of the itara (river red gum). This white residue is made by insects, and Anangu (Pitjantjatjara people) love to collect it. You can scratch it off the leaves and make it into a ball to eat it. It tastes delicious - really sweet and soft.
Nurina Burton is a Pitjantjatjara artist, born in the Ernabella Mission on the APY Lands where she grew up. She currently works out of Iwiri Arts in Yartapuulti/Port Adelaide.
